Former Drug Warrior Jim Gray sits down with Reason.Tv to discuss the insanity of the Drug war. He also explains the six different groups who benefit from keeping marijuana illegal.

via Reason

In 1992, Jim Gray, a conservative judge in conservative Orange County, California, held a press conference during which he recommended that we rethink our drug laws. Back then, it took a great deal of courage to suggest that the war on drugs was a failed policy.

Today, more and more Americans are coming to the realization that prohibition’s costs—whether measured in lives and liberties lost or dollars wasted—far exceed any possible or claimed benefits.

Reason.tv’s Paul Feine interviewed Gray about drug policy and the prospects for reform. The interview was shot by Alex Manning and edited by Hawk Jensen.

Judge Jim Gray is the author of Why Our Drug Laws Have Failed and What We Can Do About It: A Judicial Indictment of the War on Drugs.

Scientific studies have still not proven that smoking marijuana causes cancer. There are still no confirmed deaths due to marijuana use in its 5000 years of usage. Nonetheless smoking burnt plant matter isn’t exactly good for your lungs. For this reason many people concerned about their health will use a marijuana vaporizer. What happens is that the element in the vaporizer will heat the THC to the point that it vaporizes. Since THC burns at a lower temperature than the plant matter you are able to inhale only the vapor and avoid any carcinogens present in the plant matter. These are also quite common with medical marijuana users who don’t smoke, or may aggrivate a condition by smoking.

Michigan Medical Marijuana

In November of 2008, a voter approved marijuana act was passed in Michigan, making it one of 13 other states to legalize marijuana for medical use. To qualify for a medical marijuana card, a patient must have a doctors recommendation to treat specific medical conditions such as cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, Crohns disease, and several other chronic ailments. The act was written to protect marijuana patients and caregivers from prosecution, yet the issue raises many questions. For example, how does a patient obtain their medicine since it is still illegal to buy and sell marijuana? To answer this question, I decided to go to a local compassion club meeting, a place for marijuana patients and caregivers to network. Follow me as I attempt to uncover the truth about medical marijuana in Michigan.

In this video you will see how to cure your marijuana plants after harvesting. After trimming your plant you will hang them up in a DRY environment. If you have good ventilation in your grow room then this is a perfect place to cure your buds for the first few days. The reason why is that the air flow will help dry your plants and this will prevent the dreaded bud rot from forming. You don’t want to have a sucessful grow you’ve been working on for three months on only to find out that they’ve turned to mold during the curing stage. With this being said, don’t rush them. Don’t point fans directly at the plants but instead have air sucked away from them. We want to get rid of all that moisture which is coming out of the leaves as it dries. After hanging the plants for a few days you can see whether or not they are ready to be placed in storage containers by attempting to snap a mid sized stem. If the stem cracks nicely it’s ready. If it’s still bendy and full of juice let it hang for another day or so. The outside buds will get dry as the moisture leaves the leaves (no pun intended) . There will still be a little moisture inside the bud, and that’s ok. We actually want the center of our buds to have a little bit of moisture because when we put them into glass jars they will be air tight. The moisture on the inside of the bud will dissipate into the dry areas and this is what causes a good clean smoke. You should open your containers daily and waft a little air in and out of the container. If you see ANY condensation on your container your buds weren’t dry enough and you need to leave the container open for a little longer. Also if you have some monster buds that you want as trophy buds that’s cool, but remember that the bigger and fatter the bud the higher chance of bud rot. So inexperienced growers should cut the biggest buds in half which will necessitate a more even cure,

Northern Lights was the first “kind” strain of marijuana I ever smoked. For those of you who don’t know many in the US used to refer to high quality marijuana as being “kind bud” while the cheap mexican brick weed was commonly referred to as Schwag. In this video we see a closet grow of Northern Lights marijuana in week 4 of flowering. Four more weeks to go.

Northern Lights was first developed in the 1970s in Wolverine, Michigan, and since the initial hybridization has developed numerous sub-strains with varying qualities and features.A notable sub-strain is Northern Lights #1, which was the original strain developed. It is composed of one quarter C. indica ssp. indica (from Thailand) and three quarters C. indica ssp. afghanica. It was considered remarkably potent at the time, but since then other more potent sub-strains have emerged. Northern Lights is considered to be among the easiest strains to grow, being quite hardy and forgiving to the novice indoor grower with a typical flowering time of 6–7 weeks, often described as growing like “weeds”.Northern Lights #5 in particular is renowned for this trait of growing very easily. The strain’s reputation as a compact, high-yield plant, with a high potency also makes it popular among marijuana growers. Along with Haze and Skunk #1, Northern Lights is among the most influential strains of all time; one of the first strains to be successfully hybridized for indoor cultivation. The Northern Lights #5 strain has been critically acclaimed by many cannabis enthusiasts and has been a winner in competitions such as the Cannabis Cup.
