Top Ten Best Marijuana Movies

Top Ten Best Marijuana Movies and films to watch high stoned

As you can imagine we here at endo.tv enjoy smoking a little herb and relaxing with a good flick. One question still remains, what are the best movies involving marijuana, and what are the best movies to watch stoned. Two very different sets of criteria. In this top ten list we tried to rate the best movies to watch which include marijuana. Marijuana does not necessarily have to be the main component of the plot line. Therefore other stoner classics such as “The Wall” or “The Wizard of Oz” (with pink floyd syncing of course) have been left off the list since while they be fun to watch high, they don’t directly include marijuana. So here goes. Our best attempt to to rate the top ten pot movies of all time! If you don’t like it, make your own list! Enjoy.

10. Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Fast Times at Ridgemont High was written by Academy Award winner Cameron Crowe, directed by Amy Heckerling, and featured another Academy Award winner (Best Actor) Sean Penn as everyone’s favorite surfer stoner named Jeff Spicoli. Who knew that an actor who was famous in this film for taking bonghits and hitting his head with a shoe would later go onto to becoming an influential political activist as well as one of the most respected actors working in Hollywood today.

9. Saving Grace
A small-town English widow, facing financial troubles after her husband’s suicide, begins to grow marijuana in order to pay the bills. This film isn’t the standard slapstick marijuana humor many have come to expect from weed related flicks, however the writing is great and it also treats marijuana in a realistic way. Academy Award winner Brenda Blethyn plays the role of the widow and as always she gives an amazing performance.

8. Friday
Now we’re getting into what most would consider a real Marijuana comedy. This film has the feeling that it was written, directed, and acted by a bunch of stoners. The two protagonists Craig (Ice Cube) and Smokey (Chris Tucker) are two guys in Los Angeles hanging out on their porch on a Friday afternoon, smoking marijuana and drinking, looking for something to do. Encounters with neighbors and other friends over the course of the day and night, and their ensuing antics, make up the rest of the movie. Chris Tucker gives an exceptional performance as the neighborhood pothead.

7. Jackie Brown
Only Quentin Tarantino could possibly write a film where an actor of Robert Deniro’s caliber would agree to take bong hits almost continuously throughout. Bridget Fonda is super sexy and Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) plays a flight attendant who gets caught up in drug smuggling in order to appease a charasmatic arms dealer (Samuel Jackson). The soundtrack is brilliant and mellow and makes the perfect backgdrop for each characters personalities. Also, this film has so many nods to 70s stars it is a must see for any stoners with a penchant for 70s nostalgia.

6. Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle
Getting back to classic stoner comedy flicks (which, incedentally, have become popular once again), here we have another classic stoner comedy duo. Harold and Kumar are like the yin and yang of pothead humor. Structured and Disciplined versus Care Free and Spontaneous. Upon watching this film you know that whoever wrote it had to have been stoned out of their minds because of its randomness. It’s hard to put a finger on it, but whoever came up with the idea to have Doogie Howser play the role of a ecstacy popping-stripper grinding-car stealing coke head, definetley had a few puffs before he sat down and wrote this one.

5. Half Baked
Dave Chapelle, Jim Breuer, and a special appearance by Tommy Chong makes this one of the all time classic stoner flicks. Marijuana slapstick comedy at it’s best.

4. Easy Rider
Two young “hippie” bikers, Wyatt and Billy sell some dope in Southern California, stash their money away in their gas-tank and set off for a trip across America, on their own personal odyssey looking for a way to lead their lives. On the journey they encounter bigotry and hatred from small-town communities who despise and fear their non-conformism. Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda are timeless and this film not only demonstrates great cinema but also encompasses the feeling of an entire era.

3. Up In Smoke
No top ten list of marijuana would be complete without giving a nod to the most famous potheads to ever grace the silver screen. Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin both wrote this film and also engaged in a lot of improvisation throughout. The is about as perfect as a marijuana film can get. Idiot cops, and an entire truck made of marijuana!

2. The Big Lebowski
Written and directed by the academy award winning Cohen brothers, this film introduces us to one of the best pothead characters of all time, The Dude (Jeff Bridges). A plot twisting tale of deceit, and betrayal, of good versus evil, and of a Jewish Convert (John Goodman) taking on a gang of armed Nihilists (which includes red Hot Chili Pepper’s Flea). This film is filled with so much WIN it is hard to even encapsulate it in a summary.

1.Dazed and Confused
So I must admit it is hard to rate films on a list but Dazed and Confused sucessfully integrates everything that is consistent with a great pot movie. The main pot protagonist is laughable, lovable but not stupid. Milla Jovovich is ridiculously hot, Matthew McConaughey is super cool, and Wiley Wiggins gives an excellent performance as a young somewhat naive boy coming of age in the late 70s. There are so many memorable moments in this film it’s hard to list them all, but I think there is a little bit of something for all us pot smokers to remember about our own adolescence.

Honrable mention. Sorry. Top Ten lists can include TEN films 🙂
